Campaign themes

2015

Coburn emphasized funding as the main issue facing the district in an profile of the candidates published by The Oklahoman just after the filing deadline for the race closed. He said, “We have to make sure the state disperses the appropriations fairly."[1]

In a later candidate survey, Coburn provided the following responses to questions from the paper:

"Growth has been a constant for the Edmond school district. What special challenges does that present to the school board now and in the future?"

With an annual budget of $142 million, funds estimated to be received of $136 million, and salary/benefits of $129 million, there is little room for financial mistakes. The growth of student population has averaged approximately 500 per year as state aid has declined.

The special challenges to the board both now and in the future will be appropriately targeted funds that are directly linked to the student and his or her development. This will take high governance of funds allocated presently and due diligence on forward projections and budgets.[3]

—John Coburn (2015)[4]

"What specifics about your background qualify you best to be a school board member?"

My financial management, budgeting and forecasting and high-level executive experience in business management.[3]
—John Coburn (2015)[4]

"What are the first few serious challenges facing the next superintendent of Edmond Public Schools?"

Managing the growth without much growth in receivables. Adapting to and learning the culture of EPS (Edmond Public Schools), existing administration and the community. And, lastly, identifying paths to successfully recruit and retain teaching talent.[3]
