John P. Shonkwiler (1933-2012) was a circuit judge of the Sixth Circuit of Illinois.[1] He joined the court in 1965 and would have retired on July 31, 2012, but he passed away on July 18, 2012.[2][3]

Education

Shonkwiler received his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois in 1955 and his J.D. from Northwestern University in 1962.[3]

Judicial Career

Judge Shonkwiler began his judicial career as a Macon County magistrate in 1965, equivalent to a present-day associate judge. In 1974, he was elected to the first of seven six-year terms as a circuit judge. From 1994 until his death, he served as chief judge of the Sixth Circuit.[2]
