John R. Somers is a judge on the Orphans Court of Somerset County in Somerset County, Maryland.[1] He has served as a judge on the court since December 1994.[2] Somers ran for re-election to the Orphans Court of Somerset County in 2014, winning a new term that expired on December 31, 2018.[3][4]

Somers ran for re-election to the Orphans Court of Somerset County.
Primary: He was successful in the Republican primary on June 24, 2014, receiving 55.1 percent of the vote. He competed against Libby M. Hall. Both candidates ran unopposed in the primary.
General: He faced Kenneth E. Ballard, Jr., Bob McCready, Libby M. Hall, and incumbent Judge Donald L. Howard in the general election on November 4, 2014, and won with 25.6 percent of the vote. Candidates competed for three open seats.

Somers was re-elected to the Orphans Court of Somerset County (along with Betsy S. Schrock and Donald L. Howard) in the general election on November 2, 2010. He received 30.78% of the vote.[6]

Education
Somers is a graduate of the Maryland State Police Academy.[2]
Career
Before he became a judge, Somers served as a state trooper for the state of Maryland and had the rank of first sergeant.[2]
