Campaign themes

2014

Smith highlighted the following issues on his campaign website:

The Chula Vista Elementary School District has enjoyed an extended period of success and growth, achieving deserved recognition as a national leader in educational development and reform. As we enter a new era, I believe we can build upon these successes to do even better. A few tenants of my candidacy include the following:

An underlying, deep-seated dedication to our children’s success, providing them with the tools and technology to achieve the height of their potential.

Continued support of innovative education including charter schools, whilst emphasizing the return of music, art, science, and physical fitness programs without sacrificing student achievement.

A fiscally responsible budget, accountable to the taxpayers.

Teachers and staff who are well paid and supported to bring out the best in our children.

With a Masters in Public Health, a Ph.D. in Epidemiology, and as a current public health professional, I am well versed in the kind of research, statistical analyses, and decision making required for this position.

I am doing this as a parent, not a politician. I have no ties or funding form any special interest group, therefore, I am not entering this position with a preconceived agenda.

With two children just entering CVESD, I am dedicated to the long term success and growth of student achievement in this District.

As a product of public schools from elementary to graduate school, I understand the importance and value that well run public education institutions can provide.

With your trust and your vote, I will embark on this opportunity with the passion and dedication that our children deserve.[4]
