The race for Nevada's open U.S. Senate seat was one of Ballotpedia's nine competitive battleground races in 2016. Former Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto (D) defeated U.S. Rep. Joe Heck (R), a doctor and brigadier general in the Army Reserve who served in Iraq, and four third-party candidates in the general election to win retiring Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid’s (D) seat. Her victory on November 8, 2016, made her the first-ever Latina elected to the United States Senate.[2][3][4]

Reid’s seat was the Republican Party’s only chance to pick up a Senate seat this cycle. Cortez Masto’s biggest ally was Reid, who used his get out the vote resources to make sure his seat stayed under Democratic control. Reid and outside groups heavily influenced the race and were partially responsible for the negative tone and numerous attack ads. According to USA Today, “The race was anything but cordial. Outside money flooded the state bringing the total spending to nearly $100 million. All that cash washed away nearly any real policy discussion, as attacks flew claiming Cortez Masto was incompetent and corrupt while Heck was a stooge for the billionaire Koch Brothers.”[5]

In her victory speech, Cortez Masto commented on her status as the first Latina elected to the Senate, saying, "It's not just about making history. Don't you think it is about time that we had diversity in the U.S. Senate? Don't you think it's about time that our government mirrors the people we serve every day?"[6]

Campaign themes

2016

The following issues were listed on Preble's campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • National Defense / Care Of Veterans / Intervention Avoidance: The United States must increase the scope and speed of the modernization of the military. Although our ultimate goal is to avoid conflict through a show of force, we need to be prepared to execute military operations quickly and thoroughly should force be required to protect the interests of the United States and it allies. The deployment of combat troops outside the United States should be reserved solely for the defense of the U.S., its citizens and its allies and only when absolutely necessary. Allies and emerging democratic countries should be trained to defend themselves with our assistance, not defended by us.
  • Energy: The United States needs to use its research and development expertise to achieve energy independence and 100% renewable energy sourcing for all energy consumption by families, businesses and vehicles. While we work to achieve that goal, we must work to reduce our dependence on foreign energy sources through the exploration and production of energy resources here in the United States.
  • Tax Reform: The United States Tax Code needs to be less complex with a goal of making federal tax collection broader and flatter. The elimination of contradictory rules and loopholes will not only make tax collection more fair, it will make it more efficient and allow for the reduction of the cost of running, staffing and monitoring the Internal Revenue Service. We can lower federal tax rates for most Americans, reduce economic inequality by lowering barriers to entry in the marketplace (such as licensing and fees) and spur a new era of growth and prosperity for all Americans if we have the will to make these reforms.
  • Spending: The continual deficit spending of the United States government has led to a $20 Trillion plus debt. As the United States economy continues to grow, we must force our federal government to shrink in size and scope in order to match revenue to spending while paying down the immoral debt we have already accumulated. The end goal is to restrict our government to its core mission: to only do collectively for the states and citizens what they cannot do individually.
  • Poverty and Welfare: The best way to help the working and non-working poor in Nevada and throughout the United States is to create a vibrant economy and an effective education system that emphasizes individual freedoms and individual responsibilities equally. Our educational institutions should be required to focus on the basis for our national pride, gratitude for our natural bounty, and an appreciation for the basic principles established by the founding fathers.
