Ethics inquiry, retirement, and an attempt to withdraw retirement announcement (2014)
Pitman announced, in early September 2014, that she would retire in December 2014. At that same time, the Judicial Qualifications Commission of Georgia (JQC) was preparing look into allegations of mishandled traffic citations in Pitman's court. Following the judge's retirement announcement, the JQC dropped the case. Soon after, Pitman attempted to withdraw her retirement announcement. She said that her initial reason for retirement had nothing to do with the JQC's investigation and that she had changed her decision to retire. Regarding the issues that prompted the JQC to start looking further at her court, Pitman said that, in a recent audit, the court had appeared to be behind on some reports due to computer issues. On September 9, 2014, the Georgia Supreme Court approved the JQC's acceptance of Pitman's retirement. The JQC director said, "The only thing the JQC received was her (retirement letter). Nobody received anything else from her. ... (Changing her mind) was never communicated to the JQC".[3][2][4]
