My wife Pam and I have been truly blessed with 2 sons, 2 daughters in law, 2 granddaughters, and 2 grandsons. We are retiring from our restaurant, where we made a lot of people happy over 20+ years, and we enjoy hiking, fishing, hunting and babysitting our grandchildren. I helped to prevent the DOE from putting a Nuclear Waste Repository in WI, was chosen by the WI Radioactive Waste Review Board to be on their Policy Council, and was recommended to be put on the Radioactive Waste Review Board by my County Board. As Chair of the County Solid Waste/Recycling Management Board(SWMB) we conceived of, designed and constructed our County's Processing/Transfer Facility and all of the Dropoff Sites in the County-we also consulted and negotiated with the Waupaca Foundry and the surrounding property owners during the inception and construction of the Waupaca Foundry Landfill- all on my watch. As Chair of the Agriculture/UWEX Committee I was awarded the "Friend of UWEX" award- presented to only one Wisconsinite a year. When serving as Vice Chair of the Land/Water Conservation Committee, I was elected by all 72 WI Counties to the WI Land&Water Conservation Board, and was then elected Vice Chair of that Board. The LWCB selected me to represent WI at the National Association of Conservation District's annual meetings across the USA. I also served as Chair of the Parks & Recreation Committee. I am currently a citizen member of the SWMB, and Board member of Disabled/Elderly/Needy Svcs.
  • I have been involved with rural Town, Village, City and County Government for over 30 years, and I have seen just how the State has taken funding away from us, changed laws to raid our user fee funding, and caused us to raise local taxes and increase our workload so they could balance their own budget at our expense.
  • I have a lot of experience at getting the job done for the people I represent, and I have been in contact with every Town Board, Village Board, City Council, and County Board in the 14th State Senate District. I have a pretty good idea of what they would like to see in their State Senator, and I intend to support them in any way I can.
  • Our State government works pretty well for the bigger municipalities, but not so much for the smaller ones. Rural municipalities are responsible for over half of WI's roads; 61,000+ miles, but get less than 10% of road funding.  Over 90% of the time our taxes go to help someone else's roads.  In 2015 we were on a road replacement schedule of 371 years.  Many of our own roads are in a constant state of disrepair.
After 2010, the State changed State law, letting them raid half of the segregated funding for municipal Solid Waste/Recycling/Conservation programs that had been provided to all municipalities through a tipping fee at the landfills.  In Waupaca County that resulted in a $90,000+ cut to their programs, starting in 2011 and continuing annually ever since.  We had to restructure our entire program, cut back on services, lay off employees, and a total of nine part-time workers lost their jobs, including some developmentally-challenged workers. All of the other Counties and municipalities in the State faced similar cuts to their programs as well - cuts that had to be made up for by raising their local taxes. I find this unacceptable, but my Primary opponent voted for it. State demands on our Municipal Clerks have caused some to quit or retire, and they are very hard to replace.  The State has reduced burdensome requirements, regulations and paperwork for Businesses, it's about time they do the same for our Municipalities.  The Municipalities I've spoken with share my goals to increase local employment, decrease rural flight, combat drug problems, and keep taxes low - INCLUDING OUR LOCAL TAXES!!  I have made the following pledge with approval from the Municipalities:   "I PLEDGE TO OPPOSE ANY EFFORTS BY THE STATE THAT WILL CAUSE LOCAL MUNICIPALITIES TO RAISE THEIR TAXES, OR WILL CAUSE MORE BURDENS TO BE PLACED ON THE CLERKS OR WORKERS IN THOSE MUNICIPALITIES"
