Opposition

Two of the five at-large seats on the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District Board of Education were up for general election on November 3, 2015.[4][5] The seats held by incumbents Larry Vanden Bos and Linda Reid were on the ballot.[6]

Vanden Bos did not file to run for re-election, which left a seat open to a newcomer. In her bid to win another term, Reid faced three challengers: Dawn Lenzie, Barry Rondinella and Suzanne Seymour.[1] Reid won her bid for re-election, and Seymour won the open seat.[3]

At the time of this election, the Los Angeles Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk did not publish school board candidate campaign finance reports online. Ballotpedia staffers requested this information, but the only free method of viewing the files was at their office.

The Los Angeles Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk targeted the end of 2018 to make school board candidate campaign finance reports available online for free. From that point forward, Ballotpedia began including campaign finance data for Los Angeles County school board candidates.[7][8][9]

The first campaign finance reporting deadline was September 24, 2015, and the second one was October 22, 2015. If candidates raised or spent more than $1,000 from a single source, including their own funds, between August 5, 2015, and November 2, 2015, they had to file a campaign finance report within 24 hours.[10]

Candidate statement

Ried issued the following statement regarding her bid for office:

School Board Experience: I was appointed to a school board seat in December 2014 from a pool of 15 applicants. I am a voice of reason and consensus builder on the board who is not afraid to ask difficult questions.

Accomplishments during 9 months of the board:
Supported expansion of our world language program
Supported STEM and SCROC
Encouraged budgetary restraint while emphasizing infrastructure improvements
Demanded that our students remain competitive in math and science
Ensured Bridge to Algebra program will allow as many children as possible to take 8th grade algebra and be best prepared for the SAT/ACT and entrance to top colleges

How I got involved:
I first became involved in my childrens’ schools as a parent with finance and communication expertise, and then tackled district-wide issues, speaking up to help rid PVPUSD of ineffective administrators in 2013, and then bringing to the district’s attention problems with Common Core math implementation in 2014. My efforts earned the board’s respect and that of a PVPUSD parent and staff community that needed more accountability and courage from our leaders. I have provided both.

How I see PVPUSD:
Our new superintendent has assembled a strong leadership team, but we have more work to do. PVPUSD’s strengths are in its on-the-ground teachers and the support network of PEF and the PTAs and booster clubs at each school site. Some of these school-specific groups are extremely successful and have created a “can-do” culture that is impressive and contagious, one that should last regardless of the particular parents directing them. Our students themselves are highly motivated, both in the classroom and through their myriad of extracurricular activities. All three of our high schools do a fabulous job of allowing all students to succeed; different leadership styles, and different school cultures, can all lead to success in the classroom and we show that in Palos Verdes. However, we have weaknesses and we must use our strengths to stand up to outside forces imposing their weak views upon us, not understanding that one-size-fits-all education does not work in our high achieving community.

How I Serve:
I am always willing to engage, publicly and privately, with people who agree with me, and those who I always do my homework and conduct myself professionally and thoughtfully. I hope to remain a role model for my sons, first for the GATE high school student who delves into school projects, sports teams, and commitments with single-minded determination. I also represent my normal kid, the regular PV student who needs guidance on everything from screen time to character development to focus. He, like his mother, is not afraid to speak up for those who will not or cannot, and he cannot get by without huge effort. I represent people lost in the shuffle in the district, those without the time, ability or inclination to speak out. I will serve this four-year term studiously, and, as I have for the last nine months, I serve without a political agenda.[12]
