Cheng highlighted the following issues on her campaign website:

I am the mother of three children who all went through the Hayward Public School system and successfully completed college. It's no secret that I believe in high quality public education.

When I moved to Hayward from Hong Kong as a young person, English was obviously my second language. However, with the help of public school instructors, I improved my communication skills greatly. As much as any candidate, I understand the challenges that students face when English isn’t their first language.

Public schools also prepared me with the skills necessary to start and maintain three successful Hayward restaurants. The current crop of Hayward students should enjoy the same opportunities I did and school district leaders must recognize that, while not all students are college-bound, they all must have skills that make them employable.

Schools must set high academic standards and stop at nothing to achieve academic success. As your representative on the school board, I’ll create policies to encourage academic excellence and positive growth.

The Hayward school board needs experienced and motivated people like me who are focused on high quality classroom instruction and who understand how to manage successful business enterprises. Everything we do outside the classroom MUST support what goes on in the classroom.

Although I do work full time, I promise to respond to all inquiries related to the success of Hayward schools and our community's children. Call or email me anytime.

Yours in service,

Marita Cheng[2]
