The election in Santa Fe Public Schools featured three of the five board seats up for general election on February 3, 2015. Incumbents Steven Carrillo and Linda Trujillo from Districts 1 and 4, respectively, sought re-election unopposed and won. District 2 incumbent Glenn Wikle declined to seek another term. Due to redistricting he would have had to face Carillo for the District 1 seat. Maureen P. Cashmon and Peter Robert Mitchell vied for the open seat, and Cashmon won the election.

Funding

The New Mexico Secretary of State's Office requires school board candidates in districts with an enrollment of 12,000 students or more to file an annual report each year. Candidates running for a seat on this district's school board had to file that annual report by April 13, 2015.[4]

Endorsements

Cashmon received endorsements from the Santa Fe New Mexican and NEA-Santa Fe. She also received endorsements from a number of former school board members, teachers and community members. A full list of her supporters can be found here.[5]

Campaign themes

2015

Cashmon highlighted the following issues on her campaign website:

Safe Learning Environment

I will make a safe learning environment a priority, whether it’s in the classroom, on the playgrounds, or in our athletic facilities.
Providing a safe learning environment for all students is essential. We are not doing enough to achieve this goal in a timely manner. Students have been placed on unsafe athletic facilities, playgrounds, and learning environments. I will push for the Board to have regular and effective safety briefings, reviews, discussions and then take timely action on the issues raised. The 2017 Bond must first address safety/security/ADA issues and then focus on the continual maintainance of our facilities. Only after these issues are resolved should spending proceed on new programs/ buildings/facilities. I will always put the safety and security of your children first.

Working for Each & Every Student
I will work to ensure every student is provided with the necessary resources to learn and be successful.
I will work to ensure every student is provided with the necessary resources to learn and be successful. I will help to find ways to make sure the graduation and proficiency rates match. Our students should leave high school with the skills they need to succeed in college or post-secondary training. Students should not leave Santa Fe Public Schools with a further requirement of remediation courses at additional time and expense.

Respect & Support Our Professionals
I will respect and support our outstanding professionals. They deserve it!
I believe teachers do not fear being professionally evaluated. However, they desire a system that can be clearly understood and is fair and equitable. The Teacher Evaluation System is broken and creating low morale among these dedicated professionals. We need to establish a fair, equitable evaluation system for all teachers, while complying with the state mandate to use test scores in evaluations. Until a fair, equitable teacher evaluation system is in place, it is imperative that the system not be used for employment decisions or for public release. This information should be part of the employee's personnel file and protected as such.

Listen to You in a Meaningful Manner
I will advocate for changes in the Public Forum rules to allow for meaningful presentations rather than sound bites.
Public forum should allow enough time for constituents to adequately inform the School Board of their concerns. If this means individuals wish to share time I am in full support of this concept and will work to change this policy. The School Board should hear meaningful presentations from their constituents rather than be governed by 2-3 minute sound bites.

Ask for vote prior to raising your taxes
I will seek your vote first, prior to raising your taxes.
I will seek your vote before raising your taxes and abide by the results. Voters need the chance to first vote on any new taxes to support educational objectives, no matter how worthy the initiative. A case in point is the recent Education Technology note. Just because the law allows the School District to raise your taxes without first asking you, does not mean we should. This community has generously supported the School District and it is imperative to continue to have their trust and support.[6]
