My name is Megan Thielfoldt and I am running for City Council here in Elko New Market where I live with my husband and rescue dog. We moved here to start and raise our family and I want to have a hand in shaping the future for the next generation and supporting those who helped build our town.

My background is in public affairs where I work to build coalitions and support grassroots advocacy efforts. I currently serve as Vice Chair on the FIT Academy Charter School board and am an appointed council member on the Regent Candidate Advisory Council that screens Board of Regents candidates for my alma mater, the University of Minnesota. I also volunteer in the kids ministry at my church and my husband and I host our church group at our home here in ENM.

Elko New Market deserves a fresh voice with not only creative ideas, but the time and passion to follow through. I have a proven track record of investing in my community and the energy & relationships to listen first, and next lead & deliver.
  • Community Collaboration. Community collaboration is necessary to build trust and contributes to a sense of cohesion within our city. By implementing initiatives that encourage relationship-building between residents and the council, city government can function proactively and efficiently. I plan to implement my own council member office hours outside of regular meetings to be available to residents in addition to continuing to knocking doors in non-election years to ensure we are hearing from all voices in the community. The reality is, many in our town are busy parents, workers, caregivers, etc. and cannot always attend council meetings and public forums. It is incredibly important that we meet people where they’re at.
  • Transparency and Accountability. Communication to residents needs to be more clear and consistent and our city government needs to be more accessible beyond traditional council meetings and workshops, allowing ample opportunity for voices to be heard. By transforming our bi-monthly newsletter to a monthly publication that also goes out digitally via email, we can ensure information is distributed in a timely and diverse fashion. This information also needs to be distilled down to the most digestible and understandable terms. We need to work on building back trust with our residents to create an understanding of the duties entrusted to the council for greater transparency and accountability.
  • Responsible Growth. I share the desire of many in our town to retain our small-town culture. I aim to advocate for both our long-standing residents who helped build our town, and the newer, younger families who moved here for all we have to offer. Residential neighborhoods are the foundation of our city. They are also the foundation to supporting our current businesses and attracting new locally-owned small businesses. Our city should be more proactive in securing land and developing more residential neighborhoods if we are serious about attracting more business amenities like a hardware store, grocery store, or coffee shop.
I am personally very passionate about economic/tax policy, education policy, and health policy. I earned my bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities in political science and history as I have always had an interest in the systems of government, primarily at the local and state level. I have worked in the Minnesota State Senate and helped manage numerous local campaigns that have helped me to hone in on my skills of finding common ground and building connections.
Caribou Coffee barista. I worked there for over 7 years and my manager from back then now lives in Elko New Market and is a supporter of my campaign!
