Michael J. Martirano is a former West Virginia superintendent of schools. He was selected as the permanent replacement to James Phares in July 2014 and was sworn into office on September 15, 2014, replacing interim superintendent Charles K. Heinlein.[1]

Martirano announced his resignation on September 20, 2016, which was intended at the time to take effect on June 30, 2017.[2] Following the selection of Steven L. Paine as Martirano's successor on March 23, 2017, the West Virginia Board of Education asked Martirano to step down that same day, citing the need for a stable transition of power.[3]

"With the prolonged illness of my wife and her eventual death, I now find myself being both a dad and mom to my three children who reside in Maryland," he wrote in the announcement.[2] His wife, Silvana, was found in the water off the coast of Maryland in May 2016; her death was later ruled a suicide.[5]
