Michael J. Martirano
Michael J. Martirano is a former West Virginia superintendent of schools. He was selected as the permanent replacement to James Phares in July 2014 and was sworn into office on September 15, 2014, replacing interim superintendent Charles K. Heinlein.[1]
Martirano announced his resignation on September 20, 2016, which was intended at the time to take effect on June 30, 2017.[2] Following the selection of Steven L. Paine as Martirano's successor on March 23, 2017, the West Virginia Board of Education asked Martirano to step down that same day, citing the need for a stable transition of power.[3]
Biography
Martirano worked as a teacher, principal and university professor for three decades prior to his appointment. He previously served as the superintendent of St. Mary's County Public Schools in Maryland.[4]
