Miki J. Thompson is a judge of the Thirtieth Judicial Circuit in West Virginia. Thompson was appointed to the court by Governor Earl Ray Tomblin on May 20, 2014, to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of former Judge Michael Thornsbury. She was officially sworn in on June 11, 2014.[1][2] She was re-elected to another eight-year term in 2016.[3][4]

Thompson previously served as a family court judge for the Eighth Family Court Circuit from 2009 until her appointment to the Thirtieth Judicial Circuit in May 2014.[5][2]

Thompson received both her undergraduate degree and her J.D. from the University of Kentucky.[6] Before she became a judge, Thompson served as an assistant prosecuting attorney for Mingo County. She also previously worked as a solo practitioner. She served as a family court judge on the Eighth Family Court Circuit from 2009 until her appointment to the Thirtieth Judicial Circuit in 2014.[2]

West Virginia held general elections for county judicial offices on May 10, 2016. This date coincided with partisan primaries for statewide and federal offices. The 2016 election was the first nonpartisan election for the state's judicial seats since statehood in 1863. Learn more about this change here. Candidates interested in filing for the election submitted paperwork by January 30, 2016. Incumbent Miki Thompson defeated Teresa McCune and Robert Carlton in the general election for the West Virginia Judicial Circuit 30 seat.[4]

The judges of the West Virginia Circuit Court are elected in nonpartisan elections to serve eight-year terms. Judges must run for re-election when their terms expire.[7]

The chief judge of each circuit court is selected by peer vote. Term lengths vary by circuit.[7]

Qualifications
To serve on a West Virginia Circuit Court, a judge must be:[7]

  • a citizen of West Virginia for at least five years;
  • a resident of his or her circuit;
  • at least 30 years old; and
  • practiced in law for at least five years.

Thompson ran for re-election to the Thirtieth Judicial Circuit.
Primary: She was successful in the Democratic primary on May 13, 2014, receiving 39.0 percent of the vote. She competed against Teresa McCune, Jonathan Jewell, and Robert H. Carlton.
General: She was unopposed in the general election on November 4, 2014. [3][8]
