North Dakota Supreme Court does not settle nickname argument
April 9, 2012
North Dakota: The North Dakota Supreme Court has decided that the use of the "Fighting Sioux" nickname by the University of North Dakota's sport teams is an issue best left to the voters of the state. Now, the North Dakota University "Fighting Sioux" Referendum, Measure 4 will determine the fate of the controversial nickname.[1]
Following the court's decision, the President of the university issued a statement which included:
...it is clear now that if the referendum is passed in June, the University of North Dakota will remain under NCAA sanctions and that this will have a damaging effect on UND’s athletics teams, and will compromise recruitment, scheduling and UND’s relationship with other collegiate athletics programs.[2]
