Three seats on the Raleigh County Schools school board were up for general election on May 13, 2014. Charlotte Hutchens, Larry D. Ford and Cindy Jafary defeated John P. Fernald, Jim Fraley, Al Martine and Marsha K. Smith for the three open positions.

Raleigh County Schools is located in Raleigh County, West Virginia. Raleigh County is home to 78,833 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] Raleigh County Schools was the fifth-largest school district in West Virginia, serving 12,372 students during the 2010-2011 school year.[2]

Demographics

Raleigh County underperformed in comparison to the rest of West Virginia in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 16.1% of Raleigh County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 17.9% for West Virginia as a whole. The median household income in Raleigh County was $39,325 compared to $40,400 for the state of West Virginia. The poverty rate in Raleigh County was 17.5% compared to 17.6% for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Raleigh school board consists of five members elected to four-year terms at-large. There was no primary election and the general election was held on May 13, 2014. Three seats were on the ballot in 2014 and two seats are on the ballot in 2016.[4]

Candidates began to file affidavits of candidacy on January 13, 2014. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was January 25, 2014.[5]

Issues in the district

Superintendent steps down

Raleigh County Schools' superintendent, Jim Brown, resigned from his position in March 2014. He cited family health issues as the primary reason for stepping down. The board named Assistant School Superintendent David Price as the new superintendent in April 2014. He began his new position on July 1, 2014.[7][8][9]
