An effort to recall Trustee Robert Lyng did not go to a vote in Marshall Township, Michigan, after signatures were not submitted by the deadline.[1][2]

Recall supporters

Resident Glenn Kowalske filed the recall petition with the Calhoun County Clerk's Office on March 13, 2023. Organizers opposed Lyng's vote to approve land transfers to Marshall Township. The land transfers made it possible to add utility service to a proposed site for a large-scale manufacturing plant. Ford Motor Company announced in February 2023 that it intended to develop an electric vehicle battery plant at the site.[1][3]

Recall organizers alleged that Lyng had a conflict of interest when he voted to approve the land transfers because he served as a board member for the Marshall Area Economic Development Alliance while also serving as a township planning commissioner.[1]

Recall opponents

Lyng declined to comment on the recall campaign to the Battle Creek Enquirer.[1]

For a recall election to be scheduled, organizers would need to collect about 439 signatures within a 60-day period.[1]

The Calhoun County Election Commission rejected the petition for circulation in a hearing on March 30, 2023.[1] Recall organizer Glenn Kowalske submitted new petition language, which the commission approved on April 11, 2023.[4]
