Dear Maple Grove Residents,

I’m running for City Council because I believe in a Maple Grove where every resident thrives. Our community is rich in diversity, strength, and potential, and I’m committed to ensuring that the opportunities we have are shared by all. As a Paul Harris Fellow and a long-time advocate for equity, my mission is to address disparities and improve access to resources, from workforce development to safety and public services.

Maple Grove deserves leadership that listens and acts. I will work to build stronger connections between residents, foster a more inclusive community, and prioritize safety and well-being for every neighborhood. From my experience in public service to my deep love for this community, I’m ready to be your voice on the council.

Together, we can make Maple Grove a place where everyone belongs and prospers. I humbly ask for your vote to serve all residents with dedication and integrity.

Vote Samba for Maple Grove City Council!
  • The top issues I am discussing with voters focus on the future of Maple Grove and ensuring it remains a thriving, inclusive, and sustainable community. Affordable Housing is a key concern. Many families are finding it increasingly difficult to afford homes in our area. I am advocating for smart development policies that create affordable housing options while preserving the character and quality of our neighborhoods.
  • Public Safety is also a top priority. I am committed to ensuring that our community remains safe by fostering strong relationships between law enforcement and residents and supporting initiatives that enhance public safety services. On Economic Development, I am focused on encouraging local entrepreneurship, supporting small businesses, and attracting new industries to Maple Grove. This will create jobs and boost our local economy, benefiting all residents.
  • As our community grows, we must prioritize Diversity and Inclusion. I am dedicated to promoting policies that ensure everyone feels welcome and represented, regardless of their background. Maple Grove’s diversity is one of its greatest strengths, and our city’s leadership should reflect that. Lastly, I am passionate about Sustainability. Protecting our environment through responsible development, promoting green spaces, and supporting initiatives that reduce our carbon footprint are critical for the long-term health and prosperity of our city. These issues resonate with the community, and I am ready to work hard to address them for the benefit of all Maple Grove residents.
The areas of public policy I am personally passionate about reflect my deep commitment to the values of inclusion, equity, and community empowerment. Over the years, my professional and volunteer experiences have shaped my understanding of the key challenges and opportunities we face in Maple Grove and the broader community. Through my work in economic development, diversity advocacy, workforce development, health and wellness, and education, I have seen firsthand the impact that thoughtful, inclusive policies can have on people's lives. As I seek to serve the Maple Grove community through public office, I am committed to championing policies that address these critical areas and improve the quality of life for all residents.
I look up to individuals who embody leadership, resilience, and a commitment to social justice. One such person is Nelson Mandela. His unwavering dedication to equality, reconciliation, and human rights serves as an inspiring example for anyone in public service. Despite facing immense challenges and injustices, he remained steadfast in his belief in the power of forgiveness and unity.
I aspire to follow his example by advocating for inclusivity and understanding within my community. Mandela’s ability to bring people together, promote dialogue, and foster change resonates deeply with my values. His legacy motivates me to work toward a more equitable society, where diverse voices are heard and respected.
The Social Construction of Difference and Inequality: Race, Class, Gender and Sexuality because this anthology examines the social construction of race, class, gender, and sexuality and the institutional bases for these relations. While other texts discuss various forms of stratification and the impact of these on members of marginalized groups, The Social Construction of Difference and Inequality provides a thorough discussion of how such systems of stratification are formed and perpetuated and how forms of stratification are interconnected. Critical thinking questions at the end of each reading and part opening essays aid students in understanding how the material relates to their lives and how their own attitudes, actions, and perspectives may serve to perpetuate a stratified system.
The most important characteristics and principles that define an effective elected official are integrity, accountability, empathy, a commitment to service, collaboration, and vision. These values guide my approach to public service and are essential in building trust, fostering strong communities, and ensuring that government truly works for all.

Integrity is the foundation of leadership. An elected official must be honest and transparent in their actions and decisions, whether they are engaging with constituents, colleagues, or community stakeholders. Without integrity, public trust is eroded, and the ability to lead effectively is compromised. I believe decisions should always be made based on principles and facts, not personal gain or political convenience. This means being upfront with the public, even when the truth is difficult, and maintaining the highest ethical standards.

In my various leadership roles—whether in nonprofit organizations or government advisory councils—I’ve learned the importance of integrity in building long-lasting trust. It’s about keeping promises, standing up for what is right, and making decisions in the best interest of the entire community. Integrity means acting with moral courage and doing what’s right, even when it may not be the most popular option.

Accountability
Accountability is critical for any elected official. It means being responsible for your decisions and actions and being transparent with the people you serve. Elected officials must maintain open lines of communication with their constituents, listening to their concerns and responding to their needs. Accountability also involves owning mistakes, learning from them, and working to correct them.

As a public servant, I believe it is essential to ensure that the community understands how decisions are made and why. This transparency fosters trust and ensures that officials are truly representing the will of the people. Keeping constituents informed
I believe that several qualities I possess would contribute to my success as an officeholder. My deep commitment to community service drives my actions and decisions, fueling my motivation to advocate for the needs of all residents. I have honed strong communication skills that enable me to engage effectively with diverse groups, listen to constituents, and convey complex information clearly.

Additionally, my experience in navigating challenges has equipped me with strong problem-solving abilities, allowing me to approach issues creatively and collaboratively. Empathy and understanding, developed through my work with diverse populations, ensure that all voices are heard and respected, fostering inclusivity and building trust within the community.

My leadership experience in community organizations has taught me the importance of collaboration, and I firmly believe in working together with other council members and stakeholders to achieve common goals. Lastly, I prioritize integrity and accountability in all my actions, ensuring transparency and responsibility to build trust with constituents and keep my focus on their best interests. Collectively, these qualities position me well to serve effectively and make a positive impact in the community.
The core responsibilities of a Maple Grove City Council member center around representing the community, making informed decisions for the city’s future, and ensuring transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in local governance. As an elected official, you must prioritize the well-being of all residents, requiring dedication, responsiveness, and a commitment to enhancing the quality of life in the community.

Representing the Community
The primary responsibility of a City Council member is to represent the diverse voices of Maple Grove’s residents. Engaging with constituents, listening to their concerns, and advocating for their needs at the local level is essential. Whether the issues relate to public safety, housing, infrastructure, or economic development, the job requires being accessible and actively listening to the community. Building strong relationships with residents through regular communication and attending community events is key to effective representation.

Informed Decision-Making

City Council members are tasked with making thoughtful, informed decisions on policies, budgets, zoning, and long-term city planning. This requires reviewing data, consulting experts, and considering the long-term impact of decisions on the community’s future. Responsible growth, economic development, and environmental sustainability are crucial for the continued success of Maple Grove. A City Council member must balance development while preserving the community’s character and quality of life.

Transparency and Accountability

Maintaining transparency and accountability is another core responsibility. Elected officials must ensure the public is informed about decisions, policies, and city projects. Open government operations foster trust between residents and the Council, empowering community members to stay engaged. Additionally, being fiscally responsible with taxpayer dollars and ensuring resources are used efficiently is vital to good governance.
I aspire to leave a legacy of inclusivity, empowerment, and community engagement. My goal is to create a Maple Grove where every resident feels valued, heard, and actively involved in shaping our shared future. I want to foster an environment that encourages diverse voices to contribute to decision-making, ensuring that policies reflect the needs and aspirations of all community members.

Additionally, I aim to promote economic opportunity and social equity, creating pathways for success for marginalized groups and supporting local businesses. By advocating for sustainable practices and initiatives, I hope to contribute to a healthier environment for future generations. Ultimately, I wish to be remembered as a leader who prioritized community well-being, built bridges across differences, and inspired others to take an active role in their local government.
The first historical event I vividly remember is the September 11 attacks in 2001. I was about 12 years old at the time. The shock and impact of that day were profound, not just in the United States but around the world. It was a moment that shaped public consciousness and led to significant changes in policies, international relations, and personal lives. The discussions and reactions surrounding the event left a lasting impression on me, influencing my perspective on global issues and the importance of community and resilience in times of crisis.
My very first job was as a part-time interpreter during my college years. I worked with various organizations to assist individuals and families who needed translation services, primarily focusing on French and English. I held this position for about two years, gaining valuable experience in communication and cultural exchange. This job not only helped me develop my language skills but also deepened my understanding of the challenges faced by immigrant communities, shaping my commitment to community service and advocacy.
One of my favorite books is *The Alchemist* by Paulo Coelho. I appreciate it for its powerful message about following one’s dreams and the importance of personal journeys. The story of Santiago, a shepherd who seeks his “Personal Legend,” resonates with me as it emphasizes the value of perseverance and self-discovery.

Coelho’s writing is both simple and profound, reminding readers that the journey toward achieving one's dreams is just as significant as the destination. The themes of destiny, interconnectedness, and listening to one’s heart are universal and inspire me to pursue my own aspirations while remaining open to the lessons life presents along the way.
Why did the scarecrow win an award?

Because he was outstanding in his field!
The last song that got stuck in my head was "Happy" by Pharrell Williams. Its upbeat melody and positive lyrics are infectious, making it hard to shake off once you hear it. The song's message about joy and positivity really resonates, and it often pops into my mind during moments when I need a little pick-me-up. It's one of those tracks that can instantly boost your mood and make you feel motivated!
One significant struggle in my life has been navigating the challenges of being an immigrant in a new country. Moving from Senegal to the United States in 2000, I faced cultural adjustments, language barriers, and the pressure to build a stable life for myself and my family.

The initial years were particularly challenging, as I worked hard to adapt to a different environment while pursuing my education and career. Balancing my aspirations with the need to provide for my family was often overwhelming. However, these struggles taught me resilience, perseverance, and the importance of community support.

These experiences have fueled my passion for advocating for others facing similar challenges and inspired my commitment to creating a more inclusive and supportive community for all.

I strongly believe in financial transparency and government accountability as cornerstones of effective governance. Public officials must be open about how taxpayer money is allocated and ensure that resources are used efficiently for the community's benefit. Transparency fosters trust and keeps residents informed, while accountability ensures that elected leaders are responsible for their actions and decisions, promoting integrity and improving overall government performance.
