Sarah Dixit first came to Spokane more than 10 years ago to study at Whitworth University where she got her Bachelor's Degree in Sociology. Her education was more than the lectures in a classroom—it was centered around being in the city and connecting with the larger community.

Upon graduating she began work as an organizer at the local Planned Parenthood, where she mentored college and high school students, educated folks on healthy relationships, uplifted civic engagement, and advocated for policies that would help people both in and outside of Spokane.

She also serves as the Board President of Asians for Collective Liberation, is the Chair for the city’s Equity Subcommittee, and was the Organizing Director for Pro-Choice Washington. This work has taught her that everyone’s voice and perspective is important. That we all deserve to have a roof over our heads, food on the table, clean water, and so much more.

Sarah’s near decade-long career in community organizing has prepared her to build connections, engage in dialogue, and take action. Her campaign focuses on Affordable Housing, Community Safety, and Protecting Democracy. District 1 deserves more, and Sarah Dixit is ready to deliver.
  • Accountability makes our leaders and our city stronger by calling them in when their actions don't reflect the needs of the community. To do so starts with and requires trusting relationships between people of all backgrounds and their elected officials. Sarah is committed to listening to the voices of people from every neighborhood in District 1, not only during this campaign but during her term of service. From Bemiss to Whitman, Chief Garry Park to Shiloh Hills, Sarah will proudly represent you in city hall.
  • Our city motto is ,"In Spokane We All Belong." It is an aspiration that Sarah is driven by because everyone deserves to feel like they have a place here, regardless of their identity, income, or zip code. Belonging begins with our mutual love and respect for each other and is strengthened by policies that build upon the humanity we share rather than feeding into division and isolation. Sarah is committed to bringing folks together, creating spaces where everyone can have their needs heard, and join in to create meaningful solutions.
  • While belonging is an individual and collective feeling, community is belonging in action. A healthy, thriving community is one where we all have our basic needs met. Where we have the opportunities and resources to invest in our families, our businesses, and our city. Sarah believes in the power of collective action to create systems and structures that will lift us all up together and leave no one behind.
My top three policy priorities are: housing for all, community safety, and protecting democracy. Housing for all: protect renters by stabilizing rent prices and requiring more advance notice for rent increases, increase housing inventory by upzoning, and support transit-oriented developments. Community safety: invest in traffic calming measures, support alternatives to emergency response units outside of law enforcement and fire, and invest in social programs. Protecting democracy: protect human rights for all (especially vulnerable communities), ensure education is available and evidence-based, and expand voting rights, like democracy vouchers and ranked-choice voting.
Federal politics are overwhelming and disheartening. Local government, especially city council, is our first and last defense against extremism, which is critically important in the current Trump Administration. We can make a huge impact on our daily lives by electing people locally who are aligned with our vision of what our city is and what it can become.
It is vital that elected officials are collaborative, active listeners, and community-oriented people. Collaboration is the backbone of democracy. An elected official needs to be able to work with other officials, agencies, nonprofits, community members, etc, and co-create policies that serve the various needs in a city. Being able to take the time to listen to people’s expertise, experiences, and feelings allows for building bridges across ideologies. And being rooted in community is necessary if someone intends to represent people, and to have their best interests in mind when leading. All three of these characteristics have been incredibly important in my career. Whether teaching in a classroom, lobbying lawmakers on policy, or chairing a subcommittee, being a reliable collaborator, listener, and community member only increases my ability to lead, and I will bring those skills to council.
I love Spokane. I want it to be a welcoming, more equitable place for all. I want Spokane to be a place where people choose to stay and build their lives here. Where we lead on issues like transit, housing, and climate resiliency.
