April 15, 2024: The highest-earning 50% of all taxpayers paid 98% of all federal income taxes in 2021, the last year for which data are available. That was equal to more than $2.1 trillion. The top 1% of earners paid 46% of federal income taxes, equal to around $1 trillion.
Overall, taxpayers filed 153.6 million tax returns, reported more than $14.7 trillion in income, and paid $2.2 trillion in individual income taxes.[1]
