January 23, 2024: 235 years ago, on January 23, 1789, Georgetown University was established. In its first year of classes, 1792, more than 40 students studied at the university, a number which grew to 313 by 1859. The school colors are blue and gray because 1,141 students and alumni of the school fought on both sides of the American Civil War.[1][2]
Today, there are a total of 19,005 students enrolled, including 7,463 undergraduate students and 11,542 postgraduate students. Among the graduates of this university are eight billionaires, 14 foreign heads of state, two U.S. Presidents, and two U.S. Supreme Court Justices. The Georgetown University Alumni Association currently has over 215,000 members.[1][2]
