March 17, 2025: Two hundred and forty-nine years ago on this day in 1776, George Washington and the Continental Army kicked the British out of Boston. Washington and his troops were able to do this with a successful placement of cannons and fortifications on Dorchester Heights. Washington’s strategy began on March 4th after telling Major General John Thomas and a group of 2,000 to begin construction of fortifications. In order to distract the British from the sounds of construction, American cannons were fired outside of the city. By March 17 the construction was complete, and the British realized they could no longer hold the city. This victory by Washington awarded him the first medal from the Continental Congress.[1]
