September 5, 2018: Eight million students were chronically absent during the 2015-16 school year. The Brookings Institution reports that “chronic absence is a particular problem among students of color and in schools characterized by higher levels of student poverty.” Additionally, “schools serving children in special education, alternative education, and vocational education, as well as schools with higher levels of poverty, are much more likely to have extreme levels of chronic absence.”[1]

The Hamilton Project has put together an interactive map that enables people to review results by student characteristics, school characteristics, and location.[2]

The report states that “chronic absence is a pervasive problem that affects critical outcomes for the absent student as well as everyone in their classroom.”
