August 31, 2018: As concerns grow about the opioid crisis, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 72,000 Americans died from overdoses in 2017. The New York Times says that this total "is higher than the peak yearly death totals from H.I.V., car crashes or gun deaths."[1]
However, yesterday’s Number of the Day reported that the number of alcohol-attributable deaths is higher. In 2016, alcohol contributed to the deaths of 90,000 Americans.
Each weekday, Scott Rasmussen’s Number of the Day explores interesting and newsworthy topics at the intersection of culture, politics, and technology.
