July 28, 2023: Six (6) state legislators have been formally censured so far in 2023. That’s just one short of the all-time high for a single year. In 1941, seven Wisconsin senators were censured at one time for refusing to vote on a bill.

The first time a state legislator was censured was in 1838. Since then, only 31 state legislators have been censured. So far this decade, there have been 12 state legislator censures.

A state legislature may vote to censure a legislator if the legislator has committed a serious violation of the Rules of the House Committee on Ethics. The censure is a way for the legislature to make an official statement of disapproval with a legislator and their actions, and can involve removing the legislator from committees and removing them from consideration for leadership positions in the future, among other punishments.
