June 4, 2018: With unemployment low and companies looking for new ways to retain employees, Walmart announced that it will heavily subsidize college tuition costs for any of its 1.4 million U.S. employees.[1]

The workers will only have to pay a dollar a day for the courses they take to earn a business degree. Courses can be taken online or in person at one of three colleges—the University of Florida, Brandman University, or Bellevue University.

Earlier this year, Walmart increased its entry-level pay from $9.00 per hour to $11.00.

CNBC notes that this program is being introduced as companies “face a tighter labor market, and competition for the best talent is intensifying.” Walmart is far from alone in seeking to offer employees a better deal. “Chains like Starbucks and Chipotle have started offering similar education perks to get workers to stick around.”[2]
