November 6, 2019: A total of 67.3 million Americans speak a language other than English at home.[1]
That works out to 22% of all U.S. residents, double the 1980 total of 11%.[1]
However, the impact is far greater in urban areas rather than suburban or rural communities. In the nation’s five largest cities, 48% speak a foreign language at home. In 90 major cities, more than half speak a language other than English at home.[1]
