Shari Ruth Michels is a judge for the New York City Criminal Court of Kings County, New York. She was elected to the Civil Court in 2007, but was assigned to served on the criminal court.[1] Michels ran unopposed for re-election in 2016.

Michels received her B.A. from Cornell University and her J.D. rom the University of California Los Angeles School of Law in 1991.[1]

Career

Michels worked in the New York County District Attorney's Office from 1991 until 2006. She then took office as a judge in 2007.[1]

Judges of the New York City Civil Court are each elected to 10-year terms in partisan contested elections, with one exception. Judges of the New York City Housing Court are appointed by the Chief Administrative Judge and serve five-year terms. To serve on this court, a judge must be a state and city resident, at least 18 years old and practice in the state for 10 years. This court has a mandatory retirement age of 70 years old.[3]
