Three seats on the St. Cloud School District Board of Education were up for primary election on August 12, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014. The primary election narrowed the candidate field from seven to six.

Incumbents Peter Hamerlinck, Bruce Mohs, and Jerry Von Korff ran against challengers Hassan Abdullahi Yussuf, Michael Conway, and Bruce Hentges for three at-large seats.[1][2][3] Scott Andreasen lost in the primary election. Hentges announced on September 18, 2014, that he was informally withdrawing from the race due to personal reasons, but he still appeared on the November ballot.[4] Mohs, Hentges, and Korff won the general election.

St. Cloud School District is located in Stearns County, Minnesota. The county seat is St. Cloud. Stearns County had a population of 152,092 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau in 2014.[5] In the 2011-2012 school year, St. Cloud School District was the 16th-largest school district in Minnesota and served 9,692 students.[6]

Demographics

In 2012, Stearns County had a lower percentage of residents with a bachelor's degree compared to the state overall. The United States Census Bureau reported that 24.2 percent of residents aged 25 and older in Stearns County had earned a bachelor's degree, compared with 32.2 percent for Minnesota. The county’s median household income was $53,861, below the state median of $59,126. The poverty rate in Stearns County was 12.7 percent, above the state rate of 11.2 percent.[5]

Voter and candidate information

As of the 2014 election, the St. Cloud Board of Education consisted of seven members elected at-large to four-year terms. The primary election was held on August 12, 2014, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Three seats were up for election in 2014.[1]

School board candidates had to file with their county elections department during the candidate filing period. The filing period began May 20, 2014, and ended June 3, 2014. To vote in the 2014 general election, voters had to register by October 14, 2014.[8][9]

Endorsements

Incumbent Jerry Von Korff and challengers Michael Conway and Hassan Abdullahi Yussuf received an endorsement from the St. Cloud Times.[10]

Campaign finance

St. Cloud School District does not publish campaign finance reports for school board candidates. State law does not require campaign finance reporting if contributions or expenditures do not exceed $750 in a calendar year.[11]
