Former U.S. Vice President's endorsement not enough in Minnesota school board election

It's a bitter pill to swallow when an endorsement from the former vice president of the United States can't win you a school board seat, but that's what happened in the Rochester Public Schools Board of Education primary election in Minnesota on Tuesday.
Newcomer Nora Dooley entered the primary for the Position 5 seat with several major endorsements, not the least of which was one from former U.S. Vice President Walter Mondale (D), who served in the Carter administration from 1977 to 1981 and who ran unsuccessfully for the presidency in 1984 against President Ronald Reagan. Dooley also received endorsements from the Rochester Education Association, Rochester Mayor Ardell Brede and two former board members, Dr. Paul Scanlon and Kay Batchelder, but it wasn't enough to make her one of the top two vote recipients in the election.[1][2]
Incumbent Terry Throndson and fellow challenger Jean Marvin, who was also endorsed by the Rochester Education Association, led the pack with more than 3,000 votes each. Dooley placed in third with 1,811 votes, and Matthew Paul Halleck finished last with just 659 votes.
The other primary election in Minnesota took place in the St. Cloud School District, where seven candidates competed for six slots in the November general election for three at-large seats. For most of the night, it appeared that Hassan Abdullahi Yussuf would be bounced from his second straight primary race after his unsuccessful campaign in 2010. After all the precincts reported in, however, he edged out Scott Andreasen by a mere 19 votes to claim the last spot in the general election. Both Rochester and St. Cloud will hold general elections on November 4, 2014.
