Stephen Behar is a judge for the Suffolk County Court in New York. He was elected to this position on November 2, 2010.[1][2]

Education

Behar received his B.A. degree from Brooklyn College in 1965 and his J.D. degree from the George Washington University Law School in 1968.[3]

Career

Behar began his career in 1968 as a trial attorney for the U.S. Justice Department's Antitrust Division. He then served from 1971 to 1975 as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. In 1976 and 1977, he worked as the Chief Assistant Special State Prosecutor for Suffolk County. He then worked as a private practice lawyer until 1997. He also served on occasion as a Special Assistant District Attorney for the Suffolk County Special Council to various villages in the area. From 1993 to 1997, he was also a Deputy Town Attorney of Islip, NY.

Behar's judicial career began in June of 1997 when he was appointed to the Suffolk County District Court. He served there through 2010.[4] He was also appointed an acting County Court judge for the Domestic Violence Part on January 1, 2005 and was reappointed in 2006, 2007 and 2008. In 2003 and 2004, he was the President of the Suffolk County District Court Judges Association and the Secretary of the New York State District Court Judges Association. He was elected to the Suffolk County Court in 2010.[5]
