Ballotpedia survey responses

Yatish Joshi participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 9, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Yatish Joshi's responses follow below.[1]
What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
“ | 1) • Making health care affordable and accessible for all through common-sense adjustments to the Affordable Care Act, leading to Medicare for All. 2) • Raising the minimum wage to $15/hour for an unskilled laborer to make it living wage. |
” |
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?
“ | Health Care: We spend $3 trillion annually on health care in America – more than any other country in the world. Yet, we continue to have many uninsured and poorer health outcomes than our peers. Common-sense changes to the ACA are a critical first step toward Medicare for All. At present, the government is prohibited from negotiating drug prices, which are 30-60% higher than in other countries. A 15% reduction in the cost of prescription drugs would result in $600 billion savings over the next decade. Similarly, we cannot competitively bid for medical equipment and devices, like diabetes test strips, which would save $50 billion over next decade. Remarkably, 1/3 of our current medical spending is going to corporations at the expense of the people. We need a system that focuses not on access to insurance, but access to care.
Education/Jobs-Skills Training: A well-educated citizenry is a boon for all Americans and leads to both a well-informed society and a stronger economy – both of which are critical to success. We need to equip our students with a 21st century education, which includes excellent preschools in early childhood as well as free pre-K through public college. We must invest in more trade schools and hands-on training that will provide not only job skills, but life-long skills. Apprenticeships and internships in partnerships between schools and local businesses will develop curricula that support. This strategy not only supports schools, but also our high-tech industries and modernized farms, while also attracting additional businesses to our area. Furthermore, it will stem the “brain drain” by getting students engaged in the local economy early. Investment in education is an investment in America. Agriculture: Agriculture is a critical sector of the economy in Indiana and an integral part of our collective heritage. Yet, the reality is that our communities are surrounded by food and 1 in 4 children is going without a meal each day. Farmers in 1966 received 40 cents of every food dollar, but now only receive 16 cents. We must support struggling family farms so they can compete effectively and thrive in today’s agricultural economy. Federal agricultural subsidies must be proportionately distributed to help farm families who are struggling. We must follow the program in Missouri that provides a safety net to farmers, protection against drops in crop prices, and market downturns. We must also collaborate with farms on sustainability initiatives that will provide new revenue streams for families and facilitate intergenerational transfer of farms. We must also be conscious of soil regeneration as a healthy environment means healthy agricultural economy. I will support innovative economic developments in agriculture, such as farm-to-school as well as foreign policy and trade agreements that do not hurt Hoosier exports. Local farmers who wish to diversify their production will be offered federal grants and tax incentives to support necessary infrastructure changes. We must help our family farms so they cannot just survive, but also prosper.Cite error: Invalid |

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Yatish Joshi answered the following:
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
“ | Integrity, accountability, responsiveness to constituents. Listening to the people has been the most important dimension of my campaign. I continue to travel throughout the District to learn about the issues that matter most to you, your concerns for the future, and ideas for helping Hoosiers in Northern Indiana to thrive. These conversations form the bedrock of my platform (https://joshiforindiana.com/issues/). I welcome the opportunity for constituents to shape the future of the 2nd District and invite anyone who is interested to contact Team Joshi to learn more about when I will be visiting your community or to schedule an event (https://joshiforindiana.com/invite-yatish/). Listening will continue to be central to my leadership as your Representative in Congress as I seek to truly represent Hoosiers in the 2nd District. I am committed to finding solutions rather than dwelling on the problems. Together, we can do so much to improve the quality of life for Hoosiers in the Second District.[3] | ” |
“ | I know that it takes a living wage to feed a family; that affordable and accessible health care is essential for healthy Hoosiers; that skills training must be available to put our workers back in high paying jobs; that too many Americans are left behind in an economy that mostly benefits Wall Street. Now is the time for the people who make this country great to be heard, represented, and served.
I am qualified to serve in Congress because of my broad range of life experiences, my ability to collaborate and find solutions, and my positive approach that “in this life, it is not what you can do for yourself, but what you can do for others that counts.” I am the best candidate because I am a job creator, an innovator, a problem solver, a skilled and successful business man. I have experience with the complexities of negotiation in Government contracts and regulations. Most of all, I am a husband and father who knows the challenges of everyday hard working Americans to grow a happy family.[3] |
” |
“ | I am committed to serving others. My wife and I renovated the Performance Hall at IUSB and endowed the South Bend Youth Symphony, so that students benefit for years to come. We founded Bike the Bend to bring friends and families together to build community. It is a commitment to service, rather than government experience that is most critical for being effective in Congress.[3] | ” |
“ | Agriculture; Armed Services; Education and the Workforce; Foreign Affairs; Judiciary; Science, Space, and Technology; Small Business; Transportation and Infrastructure – all of these committees address issues of great importance to Indiana’s 2nd District.[3] | ” |
“ | I believe the term should be extended to three years to allow Representatives more time to govern and to spend less time campaigning and raising money.[3] | ” |
“ | I have pledged to cosponsor and support an Amendment to the Constitution that limits Representative terms to three terms and Senators to two.[3] | ” |
