SALT LAKE CITY, Utah: The Senate Judiciary Committee has recently backed the judicial nomination of Robert Shelby. Shelby has the support of Utah's two U.S. Senators, Orrin Hatch and Mike Lee, despite the fact that Lee voted against the nomination as part of a protest against four recess appointments President Barack Obama made earlier this year.[1]
Lee's vote was the only one in opposition to the nomination, although he did support the nominee. He called him "a pre-eminently qualified lawyer with a very distinguished career both within and outside the legal profession. He’ll be an outstanding judge, and I look forward to his confirmation."[1]
Senator Hatch stated the following to his colleagues, "Our state is growing fast, and our federal judges really do work hard. Filling this final vacancy is important and I appreciate you helping to move it forward. It means a lot."[1]
This will be the second of two judicial vacancies filled in Utah this year, the first having been filled in March with the confirmation of David Nuffer.[1]
