John W. Thornton, Jr. was a judge of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court, Civil Division, in Florida. He was appointed to this position by former Governor Charlie Crist in July of 2007 to replace Judge David Young. Thornton ran unopposed and was re-elected in 2010 and 2016.[1][2][3][4][5] He resigned his position on January 3, 2020.[6]
Education
Thornton received his B.A. degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1974 and his J.D. degree from the University of Miami in 1977.[1]
Career
Thornton began his career in 1977 as an assistant state attorney. In 1980, he joined the law firm of Thornton & Rothman, P.A., where he served until his appointment to the circuit court in 2007. He has also taught as adjunct faculty at the University of Miami School of Law since 1995.[1]
2010 election
Thornton ran unopposed and was automatically retained to a new term.[3][7]
