I have been volunteering in schools for 4 decades. I enjoyed being involved in the education of my 3 children and 3 grandchildren. I started volunteering by teaching kindergartners how to read. Over the decades I volunteered in shop, PE, and science classes. I also ran after school clubs including chess. I served on Collaborative Decision Making (CDM) committees for the multiple schools my family attended.

Over the years I received a multitude of awards from different groups for my ability to reach students as a mentor. In 2000 I was recognized by the Colorado Associate of Partners in Education (CAPE) for establishing Chess Clubs in 23 schools.

My experience with school leadership groups, like CDM committees involved making budgets, deciding academic mix, while always considering the needs of both students and teachers.

My education includes Science, Art, AutoCAD, Analytical Urban Geography, Speech and other classes at DU, CCD and Metro.

I walked the halls of all the schools where my kids were students. I worked in the libraries and managed school stores. I raised funds for Jefferson Highs wrestling team by running food booths at the Rockies and Bronco games.

I am dedicated to the community and my desire is to find ways to serve.
  • While interacting with community members over the years I have gotten feedback that shop class was the major hook in keeping students engaged in school.

The students that may not excel in other academics may shine in when the learning is hands on. The "shop class" experience enhances their self esteem and gains them the respect of their peers. Those skills can be used throughout their lives or lead to a lucrative career.

We have shortchanged our students by eliminating woodshop and metal shop. College is not for everyone and we need to be sure we address alternate career development for students looking for that opportunity.
  • Civics is something sorely lacking in Jeffco schools. We need to teach tolerance of different points of view. Teaching our students to be good citizens and to be respectful of varied points of view is critical. Everyone is entitled to their point of view and students should have a forum to relate their experiences. Viewpoints should be presented without judgement. An open discussion with many points of view can add to the learning experience.
  • The innovation my wife is most proud of me for is starting to set up chess boards during lunch. When changing the timing of the after school club setting I was able to make chess available to all students. They don't have to choose between chess and other areas of interest such as art, sports, and music. When I look at the participants I see athletes and artists mixing with academic elites. The chess board is leveling the playing field and includes all. Normally shy people come out of their shell in order to assist in teaching any other student. I want to find other ways to reach out to the students, staff and family members of the learning community.
I would like to put the heart back into Jeffco County Schools. I am passionate about keeping our children safe and secure. As a community crossing guard I strive to connect to the parents and children one on one. In cooperation with the staff I connect with people everyday and would love to see family members feel welcome to volunteer in the schools. Their wisdom and experience would strengthen our schools and community. I truly care about people and want to encourage volunteers including crossing guards to keep our students safe and feeling secure.
Dr. Robert Myrant, my dad. He taught around the world. He introduced me to students from around the world at our Sunday dinner table. He taught me that all of mankind are from the same family, regardless of their culture, they are all human.
I feel transparency, honesty, and willingness to listen to different points of views on sensitive issues is critical.
Putting every students needs above any personal agenda. Be sure the budget for the district is used for appropriate issues.
I already have changed students lives. I was doing crossing guard duty when a dad stopped and thanked me for doing duty. He said that I hadn't seen him because his foster daughter was placed in a permanent home. I thanked him for volunteering and told him about my volunteer work. His eyes got big and he started assaulting me with hugs. He stepped back and told me I am Angelo. You made a difference in my life. I met Angelo in 6th grade. It looked like he was headed for trouble, very angry and getting in fights every day. I had him in shop class, PE and chess club. I worked with him until he graduated. When I asked about his brother who I didn't get to help, he hung his head and said that he just got out of prison for murder. I cried. We all make a difference every day we work with students. I helped save Angelo's life. Did I also save someone else's life who Angelo didn't kill? Over 40 years I have helped many students and hope to help many more. I am already remembered as Sam the chessman, what more could I ask for. Reach out and help a student everyday of your life and you will leave a legacy forever.
When I was very young I made money by collecting worms for fishermen. 2 years. I was a paperboy for many years.
The Hobbit. The story of the struggle of a little man trying to survive.
I have had 3 1/2 knee replacements. I struggled to rehab back from the surgeries.
To ensure all students are treated fairly, and they are given the same opportunities to succeed in college or the trades.
All of the people of Jefferson county are my constituents. Taxes are collected from them and they expect the best results from that funding. Although people with money and political power would like to influence policy, we owe it to the community to do the right thing for the adults of the future.
Study all groups to find out their needs. Work to blend all groups into a student body and faculty that care about individual groups as much as they do themselves.
I am available to build relationships with any group that is willing to share their points of view and listen to the needs of the children in our community. I am open to meeting with groups to get more feedback both prior to the election and once elected to office.
Individual teachers may have different approaches. Measuring students success is difficult. Although test scores are an indicator there may be other measurements that could help identify areas of need.
Watch every dollar to see that it goes into necessary area only.
As a crossing guard I see dangerous situations daily. I would like to have a video for parents instructing them in the cross walk culture. If we involve the community we can make drop off and pickup safer for all.
Currently I support the mental health needs of the students and faculty by being a caring mentor and listening to their issues. I think this is another area where grandparents volunteering in the schools would add a comfort factor
An environment where ideas are valued and creativity is fostered.
Direct communication is best. I do this daily while being a community crossing guard at two schools. I would like to branch out to more schools and make myself available at other times of the day. My willingness to listen and a life time of parenting and grandparenting makes me a person they can talk to about any issue.
Show recruit's where we are on the pay scale compared to other district's. Talk about the new shop classes.
Although we have Tech classes offsite I would like more to be available in the schools starting in Middle School. Cooking, woodshop, metal shop, and auto body for students can result in more Sh rounded adults in the future.
As AI uses develop in the coming years I believe that students should be aware of the potential positive uses. Although a tool, it should be stressed that individuality and self expression is critical.
A 40 year old man was working with my son and recognized the last name. He was working as a HVAC service man, He told my son how much of a difference I had made when I assisted in his shop class decades earlier.
Reaching thousands of students through chess. I have been a Chess Tournament Director in Colorado since the 1980's. In 2023 I received an Outstanding Community Service Award for my service.
