Schmidt is a mom to four children who attend school in the Mason City School District. She has lived in the district for 13 years with her husband and children. She obtained a bachelor's degree in business administration in May 2015.[2]

Two of the five seats on the Mason City School District Board of Education were up for election on November 3, 2015. All members represent the district at-large.
