I'm a proud JCCC graduate. My education here opened the door to a bachelor's degree in criminal justice with an emphasis in legal studies - and a world of opportunity.

I've collaborated with prosecutors and policymakers at the state and federal levels. I've served a diverse group of clients at a leading financial services firm. And these experiences prepared me for my work today in the state treasurer's office educating community groups and students across Kansas about financial literacy, college savings plans, and savings programs for people with disabilities.

Through it all, giving back has been an important part of my life because I know what it's like to need a helping hand. During my childhood years, despite my parents' best efforts, there were times we didn't have running water and electricity at home, and some said my future was grim because I had fallen so far behind in school.

Educators at JCCC helped turn my future into hope, so now it's important to me to help other young people reach their full potential, too. As a former youth minister, I take joy in mentoring local high school Overland Park and Lenexa.

  • Kansans are tired of the partisan grudge matches at both the local, state, and federal levels of government. Without checking our values at the door, we will work alongside anyone who truly desires a better Kansas.
  • Fresh new perspectives are needed in Topeka. The same old approaches simply won't work living in a time as such. Innovation and creativity will be needed.
  • Hope. There's so much doom and gloom today, and I believe even through hardship - God hasn't mismanaged anything. I plan to carry an attitude of victory and overcoming not only the legislature, but my community here in District 16 as well.
Considering I was born in a community that didn't value learning, I would say education. I struggled with literacy all the way up to my freshman year in college. Thanks to educators at Johnson County Community College, I was able to reach a level of reading that was beyond the expectation!
My mother and father are my heroes. My parents showed us the importance of perseverance and what it means to not simply say you're a follower of Christ but what it means to sacrifice the life you want to embrace the Lord assignment for you. Unfortunately, I've watched my parents suffer a lot of loss. Losing three daughters. Despite these losses, they continued to show my siblings and the importance of leaning on God for strength and push forward trusting in the Lord's plan.
I remember sitting in front of our television set watching the twin towers fall. (9/11). I was seven years old at the time.
As a ten year old boy, I threw the newspaper in my community. I had the job for 2 years.
I most certainly believe it helps. Today more than ever we need folks who not only have a heart for change but also competent enough to understand what is going on.
Yes, I believe it is crucial to building relationships with other legislators. Today's political climate has demonized each side of the aisle - and as a result, we have become mortal enemies. When this happens - the partisan scoreboard numbers grow, and real people with real lives pay the price. Building those relationships reminds you that even folks you disagree with are human and desire a better Kansas.
