Noteworthy cases

2018

On June 22, 2018, Ehlke sentenced former University of Wisconsin-Madison student Alec Cook to three years in prison for sexually assaulting three female students and choking or stalking two others. Attorney General Brad Schimel (R) criticized Ehlke for not handing down a longer sentence after the state Department of Justice recommended 19 years in prison. Ehlke said he gave credit to Cook for having no criminal record, bail violations, and entering a plea rather than requesting a trial. Cook was initially charged with more than 20 crimes against a dozen women for events that occurred between September 2014 and October 2016, and was expelled from UW-Madison in June 2017.[5]
