Joseph Rivera (California)
Joseph Rivera was an member and was a candidate for an at-large seat on the El Rancho Unified School District Board of Trustees that was defeated in the general election on November 5, 2013.
Biography
Joseph Rivera is an educational psychologist that has worked in public schools throughout his career. He earned his Bachelor's degree, Master's degree, and teaching certificate from the University of California, Los Angeles. Rivera earned his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. He began his career as an elementary school teacher and progressed to becoming a school administrator.[1]

Joseph Rivera ran against five other candidates, including incumbent Rachel D. Canchola as well as Magdalena "Maggie" Cardenas, Fernando Centeno, Jose Lara and Aurora R. Villon for three seats in the general election on November 5, 2013.[2]

El Rancho Unified School District is located in the Southeast Los Angeles County, California in Pico Rivera, California. It is located in the largest county in California. According to the 2010 Census, it is home to 62,942 residents.[3]
Demographics
Pico Rivera underperforms the rest of California when measured on the basis of median household income, percentage of residents over the age of 25 with a high school diploma, and percentage of residents over the age of 25 with a Bachelor's degree. Pico Rivera outperforms the rest of California when measured on the basis of percentage of residents living below the poverty level. The median household income in Pico Rivera was $55,632 compared to $61,632 for the state of California. 10.4% of Pico Rivera residents aged 25 years and older attained a Bachelor's degree compared to 30.2% in California. The United States Census also showed the poverty rate in Pico Rivera was 11.5% compared to 14.4% for the entire state. The United States Census also found that 66.2% of Pico Rivera residents aged 25 years and older attained a high school degree compared to a 80.8% in California.[4]
