James E. Shapiro was a bankruptcy court judge for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. Judge Shapiro joined the court in 1986 and was elevated and served as chief judge from September 18, 1996 to May 31, 2000. Judge Shapiro retired from the court on December 31, 2012, and was succeeded by Judge G. Michael Halfenger.[1][2][3][4]

Education

Judge Shapiro earned his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his J.D. at Harvard University.[5]

Career

Prior to joining the bench, Judge Shapiro served active duty in the military from 1954 to 1956. When he returned from deployment, he worked for a lawyer in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for about one year's time before he taking a job serving as in-house counsel at National Presto Industries. In the years immediately prior to becoming a judge, he had been practicing law at his own firm.[4]
