Candidate Connection

Paula Povilaitis participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on May 29, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Paula Povilaitis's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Healthcare
Education
Environment[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Nevada is a "right to work" state currently. I would like to change that status. Strong collective bargaining is the key to good wages.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Paula Povilaitis answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?

I was raised in Montana where Mike Mansfield was our Congressman. He was a man of integrity and a great statesman. I would like to be a politician who listens and cares about who I represent. I love Elizabeth Warren as well. She is a fighter and gets the job done[3]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else that best describes your political philosophy?
Growing a New Economy: Beyond Crisis Capitalism and Environmental Destruction Roar Bjonnes/Caroline Hargreaves
Thomas Friedman- Hot, Flat and Crowded
This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs the Climate Naomi Klein
Years of Living Dangerously Series on Enviroment[3]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Listening skills, cooperation with peers, speaking skills, persistence.[3]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
Stamina, bounce back easily, happy and have a positive outlook[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To represent the 65,000 citizens of district 32 first and the rest of Nevadans as well. To serve on assigned committees to the best of my ability. To keep my district informed about what is happening in State legislature. To work with fellow leaders to make sound laws for Nevada.[3]
What legacy would you like to leave?
I would like to be remembered for helping healthcare be a non issue in the future. I advocate for Universal Healthcare for all. I would l to see this issue get resolved so we can move on to other concerns.[3]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at that time?
The assassination of John F Kennedy. We watched it on TV at school. It happened the day after my seventh birthday. Everyone was crying for weeks. As a 10 year old my parents took us to Dallas, Texas to see the street this terrible event took place at.[3]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
Working for my Aunt cooking for the wheat harvest crew. Loved this job because I had a very smart Aunt who was a country school teacher. She had a great sense of humor as well.[3]
What happened on your most awkward date?
Doubled dated with the sister of my date and her friend. Too much family on one date. My date wouldn't talk much in front of his sister. Had fun dancing at the Homecoming dance.[3]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Winter Solstice and decorating with snowflakes everywhere. I love giving gifts to family and friends.[3]
What is your favorite book? Why?
Anything by Wayne Dyer. I especially liked - You'll See It When You Believe It[3]
If you could be any fictional character, who would you be?
Katness Everdeen from the Hunger Games. She was determined. She fought for the underdogs.Cn[3]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
My 2 cats. They are therapy for the stresses of living.[3]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Can't stop the feeling Justin Timberlake[3]
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Secure employment. I have been a teacher in several states and even in Japan. The teaching profession has low wages and crossing state lines reduced my pay.[3]
(For non-Nebraska candidates) What do you consider the most important differences between the legislative chambers in your state?
The Senate House represents more Nevadans per Senator and has fewer members. Both houses need each other to create laws as well as the Governor.[3]
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
I don't believe a candidate for government has to have government experience. I have been an activist and an educator and feel I have been following the issues of my district and state. We need politicians from all professions to seek office.[3]
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
Water issues. We have a large state and there will be many debates how water will be used and distributed in the future. We have several Native American Tribes that have rights to protect in these debates.[3]
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
One of open communication. When they are of different parties the results may not be favorable to citizens that need compromise to occur.[3]
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Most Definitely. Modern politics seems to be at a stalemate. Nothing can be accomplished if we don't work together.[3]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
Independent commission[3]
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Education and Environment[3]
If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the legislature, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
After serving for a term I would be interested in leadership roles.[3]
Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
Debbie Smith. She was a strong leader for Nevadans.[3]
Are you interested in running for a different political office in the future?
Not at this time. Would like to stay local.[3]
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
I have heard from several different community residents in my Seven county district that drug abuse is affecting their small towns. Mental health access seems to be the problem as well as chronic pain suffers who turn to drugs for relief. This is also connected to unemployment. There are lots of issues to be fixed.[3]
