Lyons resigns from Alabama Supreme Court, Main joins
January 14, 2011
Alabama: Today news of Justice Champ Lyons' resignation from the Alabama Supreme Court broke, along with the news of James Allen Main's elevation to the high court. Lyons still had two years remaining in his term, which now Main will complete.[1]
According to The Associated Press, "The changes are outlined in documents signed by the governor and other state officials today," although no public announcement was yet made.[1]
Prior to this appointment, Main was most recently appointed to the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals by Governor Bob Riley in May 2009. In an article about that appointment, Main is referred to as "a longtime friend and state finance director."[2]
Though Lyons did not make his impending retirement public, appointments to the Supreme Court in the state are always filled via gubernatorial appointment.[3]
