Two of the seven seats on the Cabot Public School District school board were up for general election on September 20, 2016. Position 2 incumbent Brian Evans and Position 6 incumbent Donna Nash ran for re-election unopposed. Due to the lack of opposition, the election was canceled and the incumbents were automatically re-elected.[1]

The Cabot Public School District is overseen by a seven-member board elected by district to five-year terms. Position 2 and Position 6 were up for general election on September 20, 2016. There was no primary election.[2]

Individuals interested in running for the school board had to be at least 18 years of age and registered to vote. Candidates were required to gather petition signatures from at least 20 voters registered in the school district. This petition of candidacy had to be submitted to the Arkansas Secretary of State by June 12, 2016. School board candidates also had to reside in the school district and could not be convicted of a felony.[3]

The Cabot Public School District is located in Lonoke County in central Arkansas. The county seat is Lonoke, although Cabot is the largest city in the county. Cabot was home to 25,587 residents between 2010 and 2015, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.[7] The district was the seventh-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 10,426 students.[8]

Demographics

Cabot outperformed Arkansas as a whole in terms of median household income, poverty rates, and higher education attainment between 2010 and 2015. The median household income in Cabot was $57,635, compared to $41,26 statewide. The city's poverty rate was 13.1 percent, compared to 18.9 for the entire state. The Census Bureau also found that 24.0 percent of Cabot residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 20.6 percent across all of Arkansas.[7]
