Four of the seven seats on the Wichita Falls Independent School District board of trustees were up for by-district general election on November 8, 2016. Place 4 incumbent Dale Harvey won re-election against Dustin Nimz and Shane Smith. Place 5 incumbent Tom Bursey defeated challenger Herbert Whinery. Place 2 newcomer Mike Rucker and Place 3 candidate Adam Warren Groves won election without opposition.[1]

Voter and candidate information
The Wichita Falls Independent School District Board of Trustees is composed of five by-district members and two at-large members elected to four-year terms. The Place 2, 3, 4, and 5 seats were up for general election on November 8, 2016. There was no primary election.[2]
Candidates running for the school board must be a United States citizen, a resident of Texas for at least 12 months, and a resident of the district for at least six months. Candidates must also be 18 years of age or older and registered to vote.[3]

Wichita Falls Independent School District is located in Wichita County, Texas. The county seat of Wichita County is Wichita Falls. The county's population was 131,705 in 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[7] The district was the 81st-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 14,590 students.[8]
Demographics
Wichita County underperformed in comparison to the state of Texas in terms of higher education achievement from 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 20.8 percent of Wichita County residents over 25 years old held undergraduate degrees, compared to a 27.1 rate for the state of Texas. Wichita County had a median income of $44,854, compared to $52,576 for Texas. The poverty rate for Wichita County was 19.3 percent, compared to a 15.9 percent rate for the state.[7]
