Four seats on the Clayton Board of Education were up for general election on November 4, 2014. Since all of the candidates that filed for the board were Democrats, the results were decided in the primary election on May 20, 2014.

Incumbents Pamela Adamson in District 1, Michael King in District 4 and Alieka Anderson in District 8 defeated challengers Angel McSwain, Kithya "Ya" Kim and Jeffery Benoit, respectively. Incumbent Charlton L. Bivins in District 9 was unopposed. The incumbents all retained their seats after winning the general election unopposed.

Clayton County Public Schools is located in Clayton County, Georgia. The county seat of Clayton County is Jonesboro. Clayton County is home to 259,424 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] Clayton County Public Schools was the fifth-largest school district in Georgia, serving 52,030 students during the 2013-2014 school year.[2]

Demographics

Clayton County underperformed in comparison to the rest of Georgia in terms of higher education achievement and median household income in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 17.5 percent of Clayton County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 27.8 percent for Georgia as a whole. The median household income in Clayton County was $42,569 compared to $49,604 for the state of Georgia. The poverty rate in Clayton County was 21.5 percent compared to 17.4 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Clayton County Board of Education is a partisan board that consists of nine members elected to four-year terms. Each member is elected to a specific geographic district. There was a primary election held on May 20, 2014, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Four seats were up for election in 2014.[4]

Candidates began to file affidavits of candidacy on March 3, 2014. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was March 7, 2014.[5]
