Two seats on the Wilkes County Schools school board were up for general election on May 6, 2014.

Incumbents Randall Holbrook and Sharron N. Huffman won re-election against Larry Pendry and Matt Ledford.

Wilkes County Schools is located in Wilkes County, North Carolina. Wilkes County had a population of 69,208 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau in 2014.[1] Wilkes County Schools was the 36th-largest school district in North Carolina, serving 10,374 students during the 2010-2011 school year.[2]

Demographics

Wilkes County underperformed in comparison to the rest of North Carolina in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 12.1% of Wilkes County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 26.8% for North Carolina as a whole. The median household income in Wilkes County was $32,009 compared to $46,450 for the state of North Carolina. The poverty rate in Wilkes County was 22.4% compared to 16.8% for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

As of the 2014 election, the Wilkes County school board consisted of five members elected to four-year terms at-large. There was no primary election and the general election was held on May 6, 2014. Two seats were on the ballot in 2014.[4]

Candidates began to file affidavits of candidacy on February 10, 2014. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was February 28, 2014.[5]
