Mary Kate Appleby was a judge of the Utah Court of Appeals. She assumed office in 2014. She left office on January 1, 2021.

Appleby ran for re-election for judge of the Utah Court of Appeals. She won in the retention election on November 6, 2018.

Appleby was formerly known as Kate A. Toomey.

Appleby was appointed by Governor Gary R. Herbert on August 7, 2014, and confirmed by the Utah Senate on September 16.[1][2] Toomey was a judge on the Third District Court from January 2007 until she joined the court of appeals.[3] Appleby retired on January 1, 2021.[4]

Education

Appleby received her J.D. from the University of Maryland in 1991.[1]

Career

After earning her degree, she served as a law clerk for the Maryland Court of Special Appeals, and then she worked at the Maryland Public Defender's Office. She was then an associate of the Salt Lake City firm Anderson & Karrenberg from 1993 to 1996. In 1996 she joined the Utah State Bar's Office of Professional Conduct, and she later served as deputy counsel. Appleby was appointed to the Third District Court by Governor Jon M. Huntsman, Jr. in January of 2007, where she served until her appointment to the court of appeals.[3][1]
