James G. Troiano
James G. Troiano is a former senior judge on the Vicinage 5 Superior Court in New Jersey.[1] Troiano was appointed to the court in 1992 and obtained tenured status in 1999.[2] He was recalled to the bench as a senior judge for two-year terms beginning in 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2019.[3][4][5][6] Troiano retired from the court on July 17, 2019.[7]
Education
Prior to serving as a judge on the superior court, Troiano worked in private practice. He was a councilman, deputy mayor, and mayor in Cedar Grove, a municipal prosecutor in Hillside, and a Freeholder Vice President Legislative Aide in Essex County.[8]
Troiano received his undergraduate degree from Rutgers University in 1972 and his J.D. from Cumberland School of Law at Stamford University in 1975.[2]
Noteworthy cases
Judge declines to move teenage case of sexual assault to adult court
Judge James G. Troiano declined Monmouth County prosecutors’ request to move the case of a teenage boy accused of sexually assaulting a girl to adult court in 2018. In June 2019, the state appellate court reversed Troiano's decision, writing that the judge “sounded as if he had conducted a bench trial on the charges" instead of reviewing the request to move the case.[9][10] According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Troiano declined to comment on the case.[9]
