Cotey Collins was a candidate for an at-large seat on the Worcester Public Schools School Committee in Massachusetts. The seat was up for general election on November 3, 2015.[1] Cotey Collins lost the general election on November 3, 2015.
Biography
Collins graduated from Worcester Technical High School in 2015 and attended Quinsigamond Community College starting in Fall 2015. Collins served as an anti-bullying activist from 2013-2014. He also volunteered for Jeffrey McCormick's campaign for governor in 2014.[2]

All seven seats on the Worcester School Committee were up for election on November 3, 2015. Six seats were elected by city residents at-large. The seventh seat on the board was held by the Mayor of Worcester but was not covered by Ballotpedia as the city fell outside of municipal elections coverage.[3] Incumbents Brian A. O'Connell, John F. Monfredo, John L. Foley and Dianna Biancheria won re-election, while Donna M. Colorio and Molly McCullough joined the board. They defeated incumbents Tracy A. O'Connell Novick and Hilda Ramirez as well as challengers Cotey Collins and Nicola D'Andrea.[1]

Collins reported $1,070.75 in contributions and $548.46 in expenditures to the Worcester Election Commission, which left his campaign with $487.27 on hand as of October 28, 2015.[4]

Collins issued the following statement regarding his bid for office:
| “ | I'm running for School Committee because I believe that our schools are going towards the wrong path. Today, we see bomb threats, riots, drug use and drug dealings within our public schools. In our public schools, learning is the key for a prosperous future. But how can our children achieve a prosperous future with all these issues in the learning environment? What has the School Committee done to ensure the safety of our children? I've drafted a safety plan for all our schools that will address the issues we face today within our schools.
For FY2015 we went through a budget shortfall. Due to the shortfall 44 teaching jobs were lost and classroom population size increased in some schools. However, the DAB's (Durkin Administrative Building) salary budget increased from $5,991,028 to $6,072,825; an increase of approximately $81,797. Why wasn't the DAB's budget cut to prevent the teaching losses? If elected I will cut the DAB's budget in half and I will work with our city delegation at the State House to push for legislation that will allow cities to put away taxpayers dollars to prepare for any budget shortfalls in the future. Common Core education is also being introduced in our schools. From experience, I believe this form of curriculum shouldn't be introduced to students because it destroy's the true meaning of education. If elected to the School Committee I pledge to stand strong against any Common Core initiative. I also pledge to guide parents to opt their children out of the PARCC testing. [5] |
