MS NOW is a cable news channel and website owned by Versant.[1] MS NOW was first launched in 1996 as MSNBC by then-NBC President Tom Rogers as a joint effort between Microsoft and NBC.[2][3] In 2025, the network changed its name to MS NOW after the network separated from NBCUniversal.[4]
Background
MSNBC was founded by Tom Rogers, who also founded CNBC.[5][3] Rogers was the president of NBC in 1996 when he created MSNBC, which was a joint venture with Microsoft.[3]
MSNBC.com was considered a partner of NBC News Digital, which also included NBCNews.com, MSNBC.com, TODAY.com, NBCPolitics.com, Nightly News, Meet the Press, Dateline, Newsvine, and Breaking News.[6] Originally, the network was more technology-oriented due, in part, to the relationship the network had with Microsoft, which invested $220 million in the company. Microsoft used MSNBC.com to test out information distribution networks.[2]
On August 18, 2025, MSNBC announced it was changing its name to MS NOW (My Source for News, Opinion, and the World) amid a restructuring at NBCUniversal, which saw other networks separate from the NBC brand as part of a new, standalone brand, Versant. Versant president Mark Lazarus said, "While the name will be different, the brand’s commitment to its audience will not change."[4]
