As a Milwaukee Public Schools parent and long-time public education advocate, I am running for the MPS School Board to ensure that every student has class sizes small enough for individual attention, amazing educators who are supported and respected, reliable transportation, nutritious school meals, and an education that celebrates diversity. Public education is a civil right and public responsibility.

I currently serve as the marketing director for Rethinking Schools – a nonprofit publisher and advocacy organization dedicated to sustaining and strengthening public education through social justice teaching and education activism.

It is with a great sense of love, commitment, and dedication to Milwaukee Public School students and families that I am seeking the citywide seat for the Milwaukee Board of School Directors.

  • There’s an alarming number of educators leaving the teaching profession and fewer people entering teacher certification programs. We need to do everything we can to support teachers to make the profession less stressful and give them the compensation they deserve. We can do this by giving teachers more prep time, offering bonuses for educators who stay in the district, providing health insurance benefits to all full-time substitute teachers, and reducing class sizes. We also need to speed up the hiring process to make sure we’re not losing educators to other districts.
  • Black students and students with disabilities in MPS are continually disciplined at disproportionately high rates compared to white students. We must invest in proven ways to reverse this trend through robust restorative justice practices, increasing the number of licensed therapists, social workers, psychologists, and guidance counselors, reducing classroom sizes, providing culturally responsive training and curriculum, and supporting youth with career education programs.
  • Every student in MPS deserves nutritious, filling, and meals that meet students’ religious and/or dietary needs. Many school lunches are cooked at a central location and reheated at the school. We need to restore our school kitchens, so students can have warm, delicious meals that help them feel satisfied and ready to learn. We can start by expanding entree options with more customizable meals.
I am passionate about defending and improving public education. I want to ensure that every MPS student from K4-12 grade has the opportunity to attend a school filled with joy. Schools with outdoor spaces for kids to run and laugh. Schools where students receive individual attention in a comfortable and safe classroom. Schools that promote a curriculum that gives students the knowledge and power to question the world in a way that helps uproot the causes of racism, the climate crisis, and economic inequality.
The school funding crisis is human-made. It is the result of years of decisions at the state level to starve our public schools of resources. The lack of adequate funding makes it nearly impossible for educators to do their job effectively. State lawmakers can fix it if they choose. Milwaukee Public Schools needs adequate special education funding. According to the Education Law Center – MPS special education costs are underfunded by more than $150 million. Our district needs to see our special education reimbursement from the state increase from 30% to 100%. Missy will continue to fight for equitable school funding for Milwaukee Public Schools helping to unite public school workers, families and supporters from across the state.
